WEEKEND RACING: JULY RACING RECAP

Following the great success of Alumni Instructors vs the 2023 Instructors Team Racing, won by the 2023 Instructors, there has been a good turnout of 9-16 boats each weekend for our races.

Light winds have been challenging, but Race Starters Maclean and Rocky Walsworth, with Sophie Green and Taylor Dutton assisting as needed, are doing an excellent job.

The first 420 and Opti Race day was successful, with Peter Dipasquale and Sy Walsworth winning in the 420's, and Thompson Keenan in the Opti’s. In other races, Tam Matthews won the Viamede Cup. On Saturday, the Turner Cups were won by Doug Smith in Flying Scots, Gord Welsh in the ICLA Laser and Jennifer Beatty in the Ackroyd’s. On Sunday, the Ken Slater Memorial Trophy was won by Atticus Kimsa in the ICLA Radial.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the Ryder Cup is on Saturday, July 29 and the fun Cruising race is on Sunday, July 30. The Sunday race starts off the Juniper dock and you sail around Big Island in either direction, choosing any channel/route you wish.

Also please note on your calendars the Laser, 420 and Fleet Race Day will be on Saturday, August 6 (on the holiday weekend). All club members who enjoy sailing have the use of the SLYC sailboats for weekend racing, simply show up at the club at noon any race day and choose your boat for a 1pm start.

See you on the water this weekend!

Weekend Racing: Wild Opening Event July 1

Rob Thomson issued the official Alumni Sailing Instructors Team Race Challenge to the 2023 Sailing Instructors. Sarah Sackville assisted with all the logistics and John Welsh did impressive Race Committee work with Rob in light and tricky winds. After two competitive races, the third race featured lighter winds and some pirate tactics by a few Alumni boats, including illegal attacking of their opponents. The final race deteriorated to pirate boarding and capsizing their young challengers. Perhaps it was the outstanding and consistent racing by Charlotte Chambers and Sophia Green that forced the Alumni to break the Fair Sailing rules. Without going to the Protest Room, the Alumni showing their Stony Lake values of respect, camaraderie and fair play, accepting the 2023 Instructors were clearly the 2023 Team Race Champions. Alumni included Colin McCubbin, Bronwyn Sloane, Stephen Wells and Sebastian Tattersall, among others. Huge thanks to Rob Thomson who treated all participants to refreshments and wonderful food at the Awards Ceremony at his cottage.
