JUNIOR SAILING INSTRUCTOR - JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY

The Junior Sailing Instructor role is a 5-7 week contract position responsible for instructing and teaching Yacht Club members and children on proper procedures of sailing, proper maintenance of sailboats and maintenance of dock facilities. Instructor is responsible for notifying students of any changes in class times, postponement due to weather conditions and make-up dates. Accurate records of attendance, injuries and boat damage are required. Other duties include care and maintenance of all boats and the facility.

JOB DUTIES

  • Prepare land and water lessons appropriate to the CANSail level you’ll be coaching.

  • Coordinate lesson plans with fellow SLYC Coaches and Head Instructor.

  • Provide detailed coaching to sailors to ensure they’re progressing according to their goals and level.

  • Evaluate all sailors using the Checklick online tool.

  • Promote member interest and satisfaction with the highest quality and availability of the teaching and junior racing programs.

  • Care and maintenance of all sailboats, coach boats, docks and SLYC facilities.

  • Create a safe and positive learning experience for our Junior members, including safe boat handling and proper care of the club property and equipment.

  • Checks and maintains safety measures for sails, boats and docks.

  • Ensures all boats, sails and docks are kept clean and presentable for use of members and guests.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Ontario Sailing Instructor Courses & Clinics Prerequisites

  • CANSail Fundamental Course

  • Sailing Theory Online Exam

  • CANSail 4 sailing certification (minimum)

  • Coach Boat Safety Course

External Prerequisites

  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card

  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C

  • Safe Sport Training

  • Enhanced Police Information Check (if age 18+)

Job Competencies

  • Ability to teach and work with children

  • Able to lead, organize and delegate

  • Experience in all aspects of club racing

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize work activities

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Friendly, approachable and able to relate well with children and teenagers

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations
