Welcome to Stony Lake Tennis 2017. We are very excited to continue the process of growing tennis at all levels across the Stony community.
Stony Lake Tennis ’17 is just around the corner and this summer is shaping up to be one filled with opportunity, development and, as always, fantastic lake spirit!
Some of our long-time tennis community may remember Tim Walter, head pro of SLYC Tennis between 2007-2010. Tim helped bring along our tennis program for both adults and juniors, providing a high level of instruction and enthusiasm on and off the court. We’re so delighted to have Tim back on the lake for the first four weeks of summer 2017, getting our programs off the ground and connecting with our membership, new and old. Tim will drive our adult clinics and provide leadership for our junior programs but his expertise will be best utilized with the mentoring of our entire SLYC tennis staff.
As most of you are aware, we have a tremendous reserve of young talent in our modest summer tennis club. We have great up-and-comers and we have impressive young adults who have fresh ideas and play simply awesome tennis. Part of our philosophy on Juniper Island, both in the ASLC and the SLYC, is to provide leadership opportunities for the kids who spend their summers on Stony, be it the Store, sailing, swimming, canoeing or tennis. The satisfaction of seeing local talent flourish and succeed is a large part of why our community on the Island is so special.
While Tim will hold the reins for July, the tennis program in August will be handed over to Connor Smith and Matt Scace. Most of you know Connor and Matt as our previous pro Matt Halder’s trusty sidekicks: they assisted and often led courts in the adult clinics, provided leadership when needed in the junior programs and conducted a significant number of private and group lessons. They both have emerged as confident, capable leaders and our mandate this summer is to provide them with both additional mentorship through Tim, along with the opportunity to deliver a top notch program on their own. This model for summer ’17 embraces our philosophy of promoting home-grown talent while continuing a legacy of high-quality tennis. I am completely confident that we are fulfilling both.
So welcome to SLYC Tennis 2017. As members, you make our program special by a spirit of inclusiveness, collaboration and support. Thank you for continuing to engage in all of our activities for both young and old, new to the game and seasoned veterans. Everyone has a place in our tennis club and I look forward to seeing you on the courts this summer!

Little Aces (ages 4-6)- This is where it all begins! The focus is on fun and early tennis development with kids learning the basic fundamentals of holding a racquet, hand eye coordination and court movement through games and drills.
Little Aces (ages 7-8)- These classes introduce our young players to slightly more advanced tennis skills, though beginners are always welcome! Instruction will focus on grips, hand eye coordination, footwork and coordination on the court. This will begin the overall development of skills required for future tennis instruction.
Junior Drills (ages 9-11)- Our most popular class! Junior Drills invites players of all abilities to take part as courts are divided carefully according to skill. Instruction will focus on grips, strike technique and court management. There will also be introductory strategy of playing singles and doubles points but the focus is on fun and healthy competition. It’s a great way to end the sailing day!
Teen Drills (ages 12-16). All ages and level are welcome at Teen Drills as courts will be divided according to ability and experience. Emphasis will be on a wide variety of concepts including technique, mental skills, conditioning skills and also competition. We will also focus on both singles and doubles strategy play. A healthy competitive environment will be present in this class but our main focus is providing a place for teens to gather, play sport and develop their skill, regardless of their level.
Adult clinics will be run each day of the week this summer, with levels suitable for every player. Men’s drills and ladies’ nights will continue as well. All signups are done at the Hut or over the phone on a first-come, first served basis. Clinics will be charged to the member based on credit card information given in the membership process.
Some drills will be high intensity and other will focus more on technique as well as stroke improvement. Strategy, point play, movement and decision making on court are also integral parts of all of our clinics. Adult programs have proven to be a huge success over the past years providing individuals the opportunity to improve their games in a relaxed social setting.
Guests are welcome pending last-minute availability; booking preference is given to SLYC members but if space permits, we love to have guests!
Pros Connor, Matt, Chris and Tim are also available for private clinic bookings. Please speak with any of them directly for more information and booking. It’s a great opportunity for families or groups of friends!
Members will be allowed to bring guests for “free play” as many times as they would like throughout the summer. Each guest will be asked to pay $15 per visit to the courts. The cost for a guest to participate in organized programming will be $35 per clinic. It is also important to note that guests will only be eligible to participate in the programming should space be available 2 hours prior to the start of the program. Members always take precedence over guests provided they have signed up 2 hours prior to the start of the program.
Junior guests will be entitled to 1 week worth of programming per summer assuming space is available. The cost for junior guests will be $20, paid by a junior member. Junior members of SLYC will take precedence at all times.
