Welcome to Stony Lake Tennis 2018!
Stony Lake Tennis, v. 2018, is beginning to come together and it’s shaping up to be our best summer yet!
This year will be a little of the old and a little of the new with 2015 and 2016 head pro Matt Halder coming back to Juniper to coach our adults and juniors. Matt brings with him a wealth of experience, having spent the last number of years as a club pro at the Badminton and Racquet Club in Toronto. Matt’s easygoing nature and love of the game allows players of all ages and levels to develop new skills as well as have a heck of a good time on court. We warmly welcome back Matt, along with his wife Sandra and daughter Georgia, to Stony.
We remain as committed as ever to developing leadership among our Stony Lakers. Matt Scace is returning in the role of Assistant Head Pro after a second year playing for Queen’s University on their varsity team and Chris Plant will be back with one foot in the junior program and the other helping coach adult clinics. Ben Rush, our SLYC current boys’ singles champion, will continue in a more formal capacity in the junior program and we are excited to add Cassie King, our girls’ singles champ, to our junior squad. Both Ben and Cassie come with tremendous enthusiasm and a love for Stony Lake and SLYC tennis. Under the committed mentorship of Matt, Matt and Chris, we look forward to seeing our next generation of junior pros develop and flourish.
We have the best problem ever at SLYC tennis: everyone wants to play tennis! It’s a constant balancing act trying to maintain class ratios and providing equally levelled play as much as possible. So much of our success depends on you so please make every effort to register your kids in their junior programs well in advance. It becomes very challenging to offer quality programming when we don’t know what attendance looks like and we ask for your full cooperation. Given the demand for all of our junior programs (Little Aces, Junior Drills and Teen Drills), we won’t be able to accept same-day registrations; rather than be disappointed, sign up early!
This year, the junior program will follow the general guidelines of the Long Term Athlete Development Program for young tennis players. While our 8-week program cannot embrace all aspects of the LTAD, we will aim for age-appropriate instruction and play as a means to developing skill and creating a lifelong love of the game.
Please have a look at the new Codes of Conduct for participants, parents and instructors. Our main objective is always to provide a respectful, safe and inclusive environment for everyone and we all carry a responsibility for making our program successful.
Rivalling our vibrant junior programming is our fantastic adult tennis community. We’ll be offering general bootcamp clinics for all levels, twice-weekly novice and advanced clinics, some doubles strategy sessions and our always-popular men’s drills and Thursday ladies’ nights. Watch for some new opps, like a Saturday morning ‘Rise’n’Grind’ for all the hard-hitters out there: Matt Scace will take advanced groups of four through an exhausting hour on court every Saturday morning, followed by a hot cup of java outside the Hut to talk tennis. What better way to start a summer weekend at the cottage than that? And remember as well that you can grab a group and book a semi-private lesson with any of our pros —an excellent way to spend time with friends or family.
As always, many thanks for your support of the SLYC tennis program. We continue to grow year after year with entire families discovering the love of tennis and the beautiful spirit that embodies our club. I welcome all comments and suggestions; please don’t hesitate to email me anytime.

1. Sign-ups will be at the tennis hut or over the phone. All clinics will be on a first come first serve basis. You will not be permitted to sign up any additional members (exceptions made for spouses and children). For Junior Tennis registration please register online on MindBody.
2. Billing will be done to the card on file from their membership following the clinic.
Little Aces (ages 4-6)- This is where it all begins! The focus is on fun and early tennis development with kids learning the basic fundamentals of holding a racquet, hand eye coordination and court movement through games and drills.
Little Aces (ages 7-8)- These classes introduce our young players to slightly more advanced tennis skills, though beginners are always welcome! Instruction will focus on grips, hand eye coordination, footwork and coordination on the court. This will begin the overall development of skills required for future tennis instruction.
Junior Drills (ages 9-11)- Our most popular class! Junior Drills invites players of all abilities to take part as courts are divided carefully according to skill. Instruction will focus on grips, strike technique and court management. There will also be introductory strategy of playing singles and doubles points but the focus is on fun and healthy competition. It’s a great way to end the sailing day!
Teen Drills (ages 12-16). All ages and level are welcome at Teen Drills as courts will be divided according to ability and experience. Emphasis will be on a wide variety of concepts including technique, mental skills, conditioning skills and also competition. We will also focus on both singles and doubles strategy play. A healthy competitive environment will be present in this class but our main focus is providing a place for teens to gather, play sport and develop their skill, regardless of their level.
Adult clinics will be run each day of the week this summer, with levels suitable for every player. Men’s drills and ladies’ nights will continue as well. All signups are done at the Hut or over the phone on a first-come, first served basis. Clinics will be charged to the member based on credit card information given in the membership process.
Some drills will be high intensity and other will focus more on technique as well as stroke improvement. Strategy, point play, movement and decision making on court are also integral parts of all of our clinics. Adult programs have proven to be a huge success over the past years providing individuals the opportunity to improve their games in a relaxed social setting.
Guests are welcome pending last-minute availability; booking preference is given to SLYC members but if space permits, we love to have guests!
Pros Connor, Matt, Chris and Tim are also available for private clinic bookings. Please speak with any of them directly for more information and booking. It’s a great opportunity for families or groups of friends!
Members will be allowed to bring guests for “free play” as many times as they would like throughout the summer. Each guest will be asked to pay $15 per visit to the courts. The cost for a guest to participate in organized programming will be $35 per clinic. It is also important to note that guests will only be eligible to participate in the programming should space be available 2 hours prior to the start of the program. Members always take precedence over guests provided they have signed up 2 hours prior to the start of the program.
Junior guests will be entitled to 1 week worth of programming per summer assuming space is available. The cost for junior guests will be $20, paid by a junior member. Junior members of SLYC will take precedence at all times.
